The Food Security Project

Story

For students, access to affordable and nourishing food is never a given.

In Nova Scotia, overall prices for food purchased from stores rose 4.1% in September compared to the previous year (Statistics Canada), with more nutritious products becoming more out of reach to budget shoppers. As the cost of living continues to rise, some students are using resources previously reserved for groceries, rent, transportation costs, and other daily necessities.

Healthy and nutritious food helps students fuel their minds and bodies and enables them to focus on academics. We want to help meet that need, by ensuring our students have the resources to make nutritious choices.

Through the Dalhousie Student Union (DSU) Food Bank and the Agricultural Campus (AC) Student Food Pantry, our students have access to healthy and nutritious food when they need it most. But as demand for these services increases, more funding is required to continue to meet the needs of our student population.

That’s why the Food Security Project is back again – to ensure students have reliable access to nutritious food at a time when it’s badly needed. All gifts to the Food Security Project will help replenish food supplies, increase the ability to accept donations, and provide food literacy programs that enable students to make healthy choices.

Impact

Be a part of the movement. Triple your impact.

Now in its sixth year, this province-wide movement of  post-secondary institutions is rallying to meet the urgent needs of students. Here at Dal, we’re proud to have spearheaded this effort with the support of our friends at The J & W Murphy Foundation.

Thanks to the generous support of our community we’ve exceeded our goal for four years running, and our objective this time is to raise $100,000 for student food security. This year, you can triple your impact thanks to generous matching gifts from the J & W Murphy Foundation and a loyal Dal alum, making your donation go even further. Together, we can ensure Dal and King’s students continue to have reliable access to nourishing food when they need it. Help us reach our goal and show students you care.

If you would like more information about this campaign, please reach out to Elizabeth Benoit at elizabeth.benoit@dal.ca. Note, you will receive a tax receipt for your donation.

Food security is a very real issue for post-secondary learners today. Providing any amount in support of this project is a donation that immediately helps students, and their families. It makes a direct impact in the most fundamental of ways.

Food is human right and need! No one, especially young people striving to achieve higher education so as to give back to their community and society at large, should have to experience hunger.
